The South African Weather Bureau maintains weather monitoring equipment on the South Sandwich Islands. The purpose of the visit was to dismantle an old weather mast. This picture is of the crater of Mount Asphyxia, which makes up the greater part of the island named Zavadovski. In the foreground are some of the icebergs that dot these waters. Most of the islands in the archipelago boast permanent ice caps.
Zavadovksi is inhabited by a million Chinstrap Penguins.
